50% of Dubai’s Dh374 million road project is now finished

Construction of Dh374 million road and bridge project in Dubai reaches halfway mark

Dubai’s major road and bridge project, aimed at connecting Sheikh Zayed Road with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, is now 50 per cent complete, the emirate’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The project, known as the Garn Al Sabkha Street-Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project, involves the construction of four bridges measuring more than 2,800 metres in total. Once complete, the bridges will be able to handle up to 17,600 vehicles per hour.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s director general, said the initiative is part of a broader effort to ease congestion in the city and will reduce journey times during peak hours. “It will slash the peak-hour journey times from 20 minutes to just 12,” he said. “It will also diminish the journey time from 21 minutes to 7 minutes for traffic going from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road right to Al Yalayis Road towards Jebel Ali Port.”

The new route will include 7km of road work, along with street lighting, traffic signals and systems, rainwater drainage and irrigation networks, however, a completion date has not yet been announced.

In addition to this project, the RTA has also awarded a contract for the Dh689 million revamp of Hessa Street. This project aims to double the traffic capacity on the busy route, which connects Dubai Marina to districts such as Jumeirah Village Circle and Town Square.

Hessa Street has seen increased congestion due to rapid population growth in the surrounding areas, prompting the need for upgrades. The revamp will expand Hessa Street to four lanes in each direction, adding 4.5km of road, and involve the development of four junctions. Furthermore, a 13.5km cycle path is planned, along with two bridges for cyclists and pedestrians crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Street.

The completion of these two major projects will significantly improve traffic flow and accessibility in Dubai, benefiting both residents and commuters in the bustling emirate.
