Masdar City in Abu Dhabi to open net-zero school next year

Gems Education, one of the leading education groups in the UAE, is set to launch a net-zero school in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City next September. The school, named Gems Founders School Masdar City, will aim to produce as much energy as it consumes and reduce its carbon footprint to support the UAE’s green drive. It will feature a network of solar panels covering 9,500 square meters, expected to generate 3.1 million kilowatts of energy per year. These solar panels will not only power the school but also provide shade for the building’s roof, car park, and walkways.

With a capacity for 900 pupils, the school will incorporate thermal insulation and building orientation to achieve an annual reduction in its carbon dioxide footprint of 1,154 tonnes. Dino Varkey, the group’s chief executive, expressed immense pride in the school’s eco-friendly features and new sustainability models. Emphasizing the importance of climate change literacy, he stated that Gems Education is committed to nurturing environmentally conscious global citizens.

The school will be the first at Masdar City and will play a crucial role in the UAE’s efforts to build a more sustainable future. The focus on sustainability extends to the school’s staff recruitment, ensuring that climate change and sustainability are integral to the teaching approach. The school’s commitment to sustainability and green initiatives aligns with UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative, a Dh600 billion plan to invest in clean and renewable energy sources over the next three decades.

This initiative, introduced in 2021, signifies the UAE’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The UAE has emerged as a leader in combating climate change and is setting an example for other countries as the global community grapples with the climate crisis.
