Successful kidney-sparing surgeries performed at Mediclinic City Hospital – News

Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai recently conducted two highly complex and challenging cases using the Da Vinci robot to remove kidney cancer from two patients with a solitary kidney.

Kidney cancer removal surgery using the Da Vinci robot is considered the best method for achieving effective cancer control in cases of kidney cancers. This can involve total removal, known as radical nephrectomy, or selectively removing the renal tumor while preserving the normally functioning kidney tissue, referred to as nephron-sparing surgery or partial nephrectomy. But when managing renal cancer in individuals with a single kidney, the task becomes uniquely challenging, as the preservation of the normally functioning kidney is equally crucial to achieving a complete cancer cure. In such cases, nephron-sparing surgery becomes the only way.

Managing a tumor in a solitary kidney poses a significant challenge, as the goal is not only to eradicate cancer but also to safeguard enough kidney function to prevent the need for dialysis. Dr. Mudhar Hasan, consultant robotic urologist and head of the urology department at Mediclinic City Hospital, led and performed these surgeries, which were a rarity due to the complexities involved.

During the surgeries, the blood supply of the kidney was temporarily closed by clamping the blood vessels, but in an effort to preserve maximum kidney tissue, the surgical team operated swiftly without clamping the vessels, minimizing the damage caused by the temporary interruption of the blood supply.

The patients exhibited remarkable and smooth recovery post-surgery, with good urine output and no need for dialysis, indicating a well-functioning kidney. Although the patients’ creatinine levels, a marker of kidney function, initially rose after surgery, they rapidly normalized within a few days, returning to pre-surgery levels.

Mediclinic City Hospital is dedicated to delivering a high level of surgical expertise and utilizing the latest technology to serve its patients. The success of these surgeries demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to providing excellent care and the expertise of its surgical teams. Published Fri 17 Nov 2023, 12:28 PM
