Emirati Calligrapher Mattar Bin Lahej Showcases Unique Penmanship in New Exhibition
Dubai, UAE – Renowned Emirati calligrapher Mattar Bin Lahej has recently unveiled his latest exhibition, showcasing his exceptional penmanship on a range of unconventional mediums. From the engine of a Rolls Royce to an ancient Drour calendar and even a miniature of his most notable creation, the Museum of the Future, Bin Lahej’s collection of over 10 pieces at the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale explores various textures, colors, materials, and forms of calligraphy.
Speaking to Khaleej Times at his namesake gallery in Jumeirah, Bin Lahej emphasized the significance of his work for future generations. “It is important to send something to the future that your children or your grandchildren can enjoy,” he said. “When your children are proud of you, that grows with them. I want to encourage all parents to use their children to spread good ideologies to the future.”
The Mattar Bin Lahej Gallery, the first of its kind in the region, plays a vital role in nurturing and inspiring young artists in the country. Located on Al Wasl Road, the gallery also houses the Sketch Art Cafe, a space where visitors can embrace their creativity through activities such as painting coffee mugs, drawing, sculpting, and pottery.
Bin Lahej, a father of six, involves his family in his artistic ventures, with some of his children working alongside him. “One of them is involved in operations with us. My daughter is involved with the Sketch Art cafe. My brothers are also involved in some aspects of the gallery. I love having my family work with me,” he explained.
Driven by his desire to be unique, Bin Lahej converted a bachelor’s accommodation into his own art gallery. Despite facing skepticism, he persevered and created a space that now inspires and captivates audiences.
When asked about his tirelessness, Bin Lahej revealed his ability to convert tiredness into the drive to succeed. “It is what keeps me going project after project,” he said.
The exhibition launch attracted a wide array of visitors, including 7-year-old painter Maryam, who dreams of opening her own art gallery one day. “I love painting and drawing the birds and mountains,” she said. “My father is also a painter. He taught me how to translate my thoughts onto a canvas. We both paint together.”
In addition to Maryam, numerous art enthusiasts attended the exhibition opening. Next week, Bin Lahej will showcase his artwork at the Al Wasl Dome in Expo City Dubai, promising to mesmerize fans with his extraordinary talent.
