US military veteran Aaron James, 46, experienced a life-changing accident, suffering severe facial injuries to his entire nose and lips, left eye and arm, and more. NYU Langone Health in New York has successfully performed the world’s first whole-eye replacement and partial-face transplant on Mr. James, who suffered an electric shock. The 21-hour procedure has made his vision restoration a possibility. Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez of NYU Langone Health led the surgical team, calling this achievement a major leap forward in transplantation. The complex transplant of the eye was achieved through reestablishing nerve connections and immune suppression. Mr. James’s donor was a young man from New York, whose family strongly supported organ donation. His 3D-printed face transplant procedure and eye transplant is hoped to open new possibilities for vision therapies and related medical advancements. In 2005, France performed the world’s first face transplant, and the most recent was conducted on Katie Stubblefield.
