Renowned Bahraini artist Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family, has made his mark in the art world with his unique and distinct style. As an artist, art collector, chairman of the National Council of the Arts, and the honorary chairman of the Bahrain Arts Society, Shaikh Rashid has established himself as one of the Arab world’s foremost artists.
His artistic journey began nearly five decades ago, after graduating with a scholarship from the Hastings College of Art and Design in Sussex, England. Inspired by the beauty and elegance around his home in Bahrain, Shaikh Rashid began landscape painting, capturing the stark scenery of his beloved country.
His art is largely driven by the light, colors, and atmosphere specific to Bahrain’s landscape. Over the years, Shaikh Rashid’s work has evolved from figurative, ephemeral oil paintings to abstract forms, with experimentation in materials and surfaces. His work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions, art fairs, and biennales around the world.
Shaikh Rashid’s passion for art has also led him to contribute significantly to Bahrain’s contemporary art scene and its integration with the rest of the world. He has played a key role in launching the Bahrain Arts Society, a thriving ecosystem for nurturing art in the Gulf nation, and the RAK Art Foundation, which offers a platform for art and architecture while contributing to society in a meaningful way.
Currently, Shaikh Rashid is excited about his solo show, ‘First Light’, being held at the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art in Tbilisi, Georgia. The exhibition features a selection of the artist’s most recent installations that intersect tradition and the future, heritage and contemporary design, and the environment and industry.
Shaikh Rashid’s artistic legacy is also being carried forward by his eldest daughter, Shaikha Noor, co-founder of the luxury fashion brand Noon by Noor. Through their creative endeavors, the Al Khalifa family continues to make a significant impact on the arts and culture scene in Bahrain and beyond.
