A study has linked strong hands to a longer, healthier life. Because people with strong hands tend to be more physically active, which is associated with longevity. Strong grip strength is also important for daily tasks that become harder as you age. And fewer people are going to the gym for grip training, compared to routine exercises.
People’s hands are becoming weaker overall, possibly because of the way we use smartphones and touchscreens, said Dr. Erin Nance, a hand surgeon in New York City. Some people might benefit from grip training if they find it challenging to hold something heavy, like a cast-iron pan, and rotate it as if dumping out its contents. Strengthening the tiny muscles in our hands also involves exercising our forearms, upper arms, shoulders, and core.
The New York Times offered some exercises to build hand strength, such as adding functional exercises to your current workout, adjusting existing exercises, and trying occasional grip-specific exercises. Experts recommend adding smaller exercises into your existing routine to intentionally work the hands, wrists, and forearms. It includes incorporating exercises that strengthen your grip while engaging other muscles, modifying exercises you already do, or adding specific ones.
