The UAE Strongly Condemns Israeli Air Strikes on Gaza, Hundreds Killed or Wounded
In the wake of Israeli air strikes on a Gazan refugee camp that resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of people, the UAE has expressed its strong condemnation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that these indiscriminate attacks would cause irreparable damage to the region. Dr. Atef Kahlout, the head of the Indonesian Hospital where the victims are being treated, reported that approximately 400 people were killed or wounded in the strikes. The situation is dire, with victims being treated on the floors due to lack of space.
The UAE has reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life. It emphasized the importance of a UN General Assembly resolution that called for a humanitarian truce in Gaza. State news agency Wam quoted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as stating that the lack of a political horizon and disregard for potential consequences would have devastating outcomes for peace and stability in the region.
Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Emirates emphasized the urgent need to end the war. Ghasaq Shaheen, the political co-ordinator for the UAE mission to the UN, highlighted the catastrophic conditions faced by people in the Gaza Strip and called for support. She reaffirmed the UAE’s call for an immediate ceasefire during a UN Security Council briefing, stating that it was necessary to protect civilians from the ongoing Israeli bombardment.
Ms. Shaheen reported that Israel had bombed 42% of UN-run centres for Palestinian refugees, where more than 670,000 displaced people sought shelter. She condemned the bombing of civilian objects protected under international humanitarian law and expressed concern over the high number of casualties, with over 8,000 people killed, 70% of whom are women and children.
Additionally, the UAE rejected attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians and called on Israel to cancel its orders regarding the evacuation of over a million people from northern to southern Gaza. Ms. Shaheen emphasized the need to address the root causes of displacement and focus on advancing development and resolving conflicts peacefully.
The situation in the Gaza Strip has worsened over the past three weeks, with continuous Israeli bombing. The siege imposed by Israel on October 9 has led to severe shortages of electricity, water, food, fuel, and medical supplies. Ms. Shaheen stressed the need to ensure safe and sustainable humanitarian aid access throughout Gaza.
As of November 1, 2023, 6:15 AM, the situation remains unchanged.
